The International Jazz Festival in Bansko is the biggest summer musical event in Bulgaria. It gathers the best jazz musicians from around the world in one place each year. The first festival was held in 1998 and since that time, it is organised in August (8-13.08). To find origins of the festival we should go back in the past, to the time when a well-known doctor Emil Iliev opened a clinic in a town located at the foot of the Pirin Mountains, named Bansko. Clinic's guests and patients came from various European countries. They needed good entertainment, so concerts were organised there. Many famous Bulgarian musicians performed there. Among them were such artists as Camelia Todorova, Vassil Petrov, Lyudmil Gergiev, Vili Kazasyan, and more. Artists loved this charming town of Bansko, its unique atmosphere and location. This way, Bansko became a place for the huge jazz event. It lasts a week and is free to visitors. In the festival programme are many day and night concerts. The main concerts take place on he open-air stage on Nikola Vaptsarov Square in downtown Bansko. Others are organised on smaller stages in the large bars and restaurants. The programme of this year's International Jazz Festival in Bansko can be found here: http://www.banskojazzfest.com/en/the-program.
