Sofia – an incredible city which not only can boast historical monuments, beautiful Old Town, a rich history, but also numerous green parks and gardens which are a recreational areas for those who are tired with crowds and hurry lifestyle.
The largest park of Sofia is Boris' Garden (Borisova gradina). It is named after Bulgarian ruler tsar Boris III. During the communist regime it was renamed 'Freedom Park'. What can visitors bump into in the park? Of course, the mass of greener. Tree-lined avenues, Ariana pond is a recreational area for water activities lovers. They can go boating or water wheeling there in the summer time and ice-skating during winter. There are tennis-courts, swimming pools, bicycle racing tracks, stadiums as well as the Summer Swimming Bath, the University Observatory, the Open-air School. The most popular garden is the City Garden Park. Both tourists and local people visit this place to rest and spend free time among trees' shades or soap tea in cafés. The park can be easily recognized by swings, flowerbeds and a lovely fountain with a sculpture of a female dancer in front of the National Theatre. South Park in Sofia is one of the most beautiful and popular parks in Sofia. It offers plentiful cafes and places to eat. There are asphalt paths for walking and bicycle paths hidden in the trees. The centre of Sofia is located 4 km from the park, so it takes 10 minutes ride by bicycle and 5 minutes by car from the park or 20 minutes walk to get there. Western Park is one of the biggest and spacious Sofia parks. Sofia University’s Botanic Garden belongs to small parks. It is located in the city centre. A huge rose garden, a tropical plant collection with over two hundred varieties of orchid, and an impressive oak tree can be found there. The next green area is the Doctor’s Garden which is a good place to learn more about the history of Sofia. It is named in honour of the 531 medics who fell during the Russo-Turkish War, which freed Bulgaria from the Ottoman Empire. It is a small park, with old trees and a playground.
