This tour is an absolute must-do while staying in Sofia for more than 1 day. Rila is the largest and most famous Monastery in Bulgaria which was inscribed by UNESCO on its List of World Heritage Sites in 1983. This valuable site built in 10th century, destroyed by fire at the beginning of the 19th century was later rebuilt in Bulgarian Renaissance style. You will see the Hrelyova Tower and the principal Church of Nativity of Mary covered by frescoes. Today, this place is a home for a historical museum. You will have some free time for individual exploration of this area. On the way back to Sofia, we will stop by Boyana Church – the complex of 3 buildings: the 10th – century eastern church, the 13th – century church beautifully painted and the third one from the 19th century, all situated on the outskirts of Sofia. They together present one of the most complete and well- preserved sites of east European medieval art.
